Katie
Stone is a poker player and an entrepreneur with a background in chess.
She started playing poker in 2004 in Dallas, TX later gravitating
towards tournaments due to being a chess player as a child.
She has played in numerous EPT, WPT and WSOP tournaments around the
world. Katie splits her time playing live and online as 'katie75013'.
She had a very successful career online playing just under 10,000 mtt's with a 49% ROI.
Katie is also a successful
entrepreneur. Prior to poker, she co-founded the largest childrens' summer chess
camp organization in the United States; USA Chess uses the game of chess as a means of teaching critical thinking skills to children and conducts programs
in more than 100 U.S. cities each summer. By the time she fulfilled her
entrepreneurial goal of selling the majority of her shares in the
company in 2004, USA Chess had introduced and continues to introduce the
game of chess to tens of thousands of children across the United
States. In 2008 she founded Strategy Teacher, a summer camp program that uses strategic and tactical games and puzzles as a means of teaching critical thinking skills to children.
Katie's childhood was typical in that she was involved in basketball and
chess; but atypical in every other way. All throughout school, Katie
was a standout basketball player and was mentored by NBA Hall of Famer
Calvin Murphy. As a result, she became the only
female ball kid for the NBA's Houston Rockets and was on the court
with them for both NBA Championships in '94 & '95. In her free time she would attend
shoot-arounds with the team and would often receive pointers from NBA
greats such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Avery
Johnson and Scott Brooks.
